Knossos Palace: Crete's Gateway to Ancient Minoan Mysteries

Thursday, 25 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Palace of Knossos, located just 5 kilometers south of Heraklion, is Crete's most visited archaeological site and the ceremonial center of the ancient Minoan civilization, which flourished between 2000 and 1400 BCE. The sprawling complex covers approximately 20,000 square meters and includes throne rooms, storage magazines, and ceremonial halls, inspiring the Greek myth of the Minotaur's labyrinth. Visitors can walk through partially reconstructed frescoed corridors and observe artifacts dating back over 3,500 years. The site is open daily, with summer hours typically running from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Tickets cost around 15 euros for adults, with reduced rates for students and EU seniors. Arriving early in the morning is strongly recommended to avoid large tour groups and midday heat. Comfortable shoes and sun protection are essential.
