Back to newsSwimmer's ear (external otitis) is a common ear infection that affects visitors to Crete every summer, particularly those spending long hours in the sea or pools. The condition occurs when water remains trapped in the ear canal, creating a moist environment where bacteria or fungi can grow. Symptoms include itching, pain, and sometimes temporary hearing reduction. Risk increases with frequent swimming, use of earbuds or hearing aids, and scratching inside the ear. To prevent it, tilt your head after swimming to drain water, dry ears gently with a towel, and avoid inserting objects into the ear canal. If you experience persistent ear pain during your stay, visit a local pharmacy or clinic early, as the condition is easily treated with antibiotic or antifungal ear drops but worsens if left untreated. Several clinics across Crete offer walk-in consultations.
