Back to newsOn Sunday morning, a local resident rescued two swimmers in distress at Nea Chora beach in Chania, on the northwest coast of Crete. An elderly man and a woman were caught in strong waves and struggled to stay afloat. A Chania local who was swimming nearby with his family intervened and brought both to safety.
Nea Chora is a popular urban beach just minutes from Chania's old harbour, frequently visited by tourists and locals alike. This incident serves as a reminder that even calm-looking coastal waters in Crete can become dangerous when wave conditions change rapidly.
Visitors are advised to check sea conditions before entering the water, swim near lifeguard-supervised areas when available, and avoid swimming alone. If you see someone in difficulty, alert a lifeguard or call the Greek Coast Guard at 108.
