Toxic Pufferfish Invade Crete; Support Plan for Fishermen

Sunday, 5 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Pufferfish of the species lagocephalus (silver-cheeked toadfish) have been reported in Cretan waters. These fish are highly toxic and pose no direct threat to swimmers through contact, but should never be handled or consumed. Local authorities have confirmed that beaches remain safe for swimming. The main concern is for the fishing community, as the species competes with native fish stocks and accidentally enters nets. A regional support plan is being developed to assist affected fishermen. Tourists can continue to enjoy swimming and water activities without concern. However, if you spot a pufferfish in the water or washed up on shore, do not touch it and alert beach staff or local authorities. Avoid purchasing or consuming it from any source, as its toxin is lethal and has no antidote.
