Back to newsLagocephalus fish, a toxic invasive species also known as silver-cheeked toadfish, have been spotted near Heraklion's most popular beach. These fish contain tetrodotoxin, a potent poison with no antidote, and are extremely dangerous if consumed. Authorities have identified their presence in the coastal waters of the area. Tourists should be aware that catching, handling, or eating these fish is strictly prohibited in Greece and carries heavy fines. If you spot a lagocephalus while swimming or fishing, do not touch it. The fish pose no danger to swimmers simply entering the water, but beachgoers should report any sightings to local port authorities or beach staff. Visitors purchasing seafood locally should have no concern, as licensed fishermen are trained to identify and discard this species.
