Crete under fire alert as extreme heat and winds fuel wildfire danger

Thursday, 2 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete is currently experiencing hot summer weather with temperatures reaching 37°C (99°F). Strong Meltemi winds are blowing across the island, and fire danger has been rated at level 3 out of 5, meaning conditions are considered high risk for wildfires. This alert also covers other Greek island regions, Attica, Euboea, and the Peloponnese. Visitors should avoid lighting fires, barbecues, or discarding cigarettes outdoors in any natural area. Hiking in forested or scrubland zones is not recommended during peak heat hours. Stay hydrated, seek shade between noon and 5pm, and monitor local emergency announcements. If you notice smoke or fire, call the Greek emergency number 199 (fire service) immediately. Meltemi winds may also cause choppy sea conditions, so check with your boat tour operator before heading out on the water.
