Back to newsGreek Coast Guard officers rescued a 34-year-old woman near Kavouri, Crete, after she was swept out to sea on an inflatable mattress. A lifeguard swam out to reach her and stayed by her side until a Coast Guard vessel arrived and brought her safely back to shore. The incident highlights a common summer hazard along Cretan beaches: inflatable mattresses and pool floats can drift quickly in sea currents and wind, leaving swimmers stranded far from shore. Tourists are strongly advised to avoid using inflatable mattresses in open sea water, check local flag warnings before entering the water, and stay within designated swimming areas. If you see someone in difficulty, contact the Hellenic Coast Guard immediately by calling 108.
