Deadly Puffer Fish Invade Crete, Caught Eating Each Other

Saturday, 4 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A video filmed in Crete has captured lagocephalus puffer fish, commonly known as rabbit-head puffer fish, displaying cannibalistic behavior as they compete aggressively over food. These fish are an invasive species that has spread throughout the Mediterranean, including Cretan coastal waters. Lagocephalus puffer fish are highly toxic and pose a serious risk to anyone who handles or consumes them. Their flesh, skin, and organs contain tetrodotoxin, a powerful poison with no known antidote. Tourists should never touch these fish if encountered on a beach or in the water, and should absolutely avoid purchasing or eating them from any source. If you see one washed up on shore, do not handle it and alert local authorities. Local fishermen are aware of the danger and are required to discard them if accidentally caught.
