Back to newsA group of 200 hikers from a local mountaineering club recently walked the full length of Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges located in the White Mountains of western Crete. The trail was reported to be in excellent condition, with the natural landscape described as pristine and untouched. Despite this, the gorge remains officially closed to the public. Tourists planning to hike Samaria Gorge should check the current status before making the trip, as access depends on official authorization from the Samaria Gorge National Park authority. The gorge typically opens in May, weather and trail conditions permitting. When open, the 16 km hike from Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli takes approximately 5 to 7 hours and is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Crete.
