Greece Launches Bounty Program for Toxic Invasive Pufferfish

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Greek government has introduced a bounty program targeting the lagocephalus sceleratus, a toxic pufferfish that has spread through Greek and Cretan waters. Fishermen receive a financial reward for each fish caught and handed in, as part of an effort to control this invasive species. The fish is extremely dangerous: its organs contain tetrodotoxin, a potent poison with no antidote. Tourists should never purchase or consume this fish from informal or unverified sources. If you see it offered at a market or by unlicensed vendors, do not buy it. Licensed restaurants and certified fish markets are safe. The species is identifiable by its flat head and spotted skin, but identification should be left to professionals. When in doubt about any seafood, ask your hotel or a reputable local restaurant.
