Invasive Pufferfish Devastate Crete's Fishing Industry

Monday, 15 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Pufferfish, specifically the invasive silver-cheeked toadfish (*Lagocephalus sceleratus*), are causing serious damage to the fishing industry across Crete. These fish, originally from the Indo-Pacific and now spreading throughout the Mediterranean, destroy fishing nets and compete aggressively with local species, significantly reducing catches for Cretan fishermen. For visitors, this has a few practical implications. Some traditional fish dishes may be less available or more expensive at local tavernas, as local catch volumes decline. More importantly, tourists swimming or snorkeling should be aware that pufferfish are present in Cretan waters. While they are not aggressive, they carry a powerful toxin and should never be touched or eaten. If you see one, keep your distance. Local fishing communities are calling on Greek authorities for support and regulatory action to manage the growing population.
