Back to newsThe Heraklion Tourism Committee held a heated debate over the installation of metal railings around the Morosini Fountain area, known locally as Liontaria (Lions Square), one of the city's most recognizable landmarks in the heart of the old town. Committee members clashed over whether the barriers are appropriate for such a historically significant public space. The Morosini Fountain, built in 1628, is a popular gathering point for both locals and visitors. Tourists planning to visit the square may notice the new railings in place. The outcome of the debate and any decision on whether the barriers will remain or be removed has not yet been confirmed. Visitors can still access the fountain area freely, and it remains a central stop on any walking tour of Heraklion's historic center.
