Europe's Record Summer Tourism Drives Up Prices in Crete

Sunday, 12 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Europe is experiencing record visitor numbers this summer, with popular destinations becoming increasingly crowded and expensive. Crete, as one of Greece's most visited islands, is affected by this broader trend. Travelers should expect higher prices for accommodation, dining, and activities compared to previous years, particularly in peak months of July and August. To make the most of a Cretan holiday, consider visiting popular sites such as Knossos, Elafonisi, and Balos early in the morning to avoid crowds. Booking accommodation and car rentals well in advance is strongly recommended. The eastern part of the island, including areas around Sitia and Zakros, generally offers a quieter and more affordable experience than the north coast tourist hubs of Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno. Shoulder season visits in May, June, or September offer better value and thinner crowds.
