Back to newsElafonisi is a beach located at the southwestern tip of Crete, approximately 76 kilometers from Chania. It is known for its shallow turquoise waters and distinctive pink-tinted sand, which gets its color from crushed seashells and coral fragments. The beach borders a small islet accessible on foot through the shallow lagoon, making it popular for wading and snorkeling. The site sits within a protected natural area, so facilities are limited and visitors are asked to stay on marked paths to preserve the dunes and vegetation. The beach is busiest in July and August; arriving early in the morning helps secure a spot and avoid crowds. Several bus services run daily from Chania during the summer season. Parking is available nearby but fills quickly during peak hours.
