Back to newsCrete is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures climbing above 35°C (95°F) across the island. The most intense heat is concentrated around Gortyna, an ancient archaeological site in the Heraklion regional unit in central-southern Crete. Visitors planning to explore outdoor sites, beaches, or hiking trails should take precautions: carry plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity between 12:00 and 17:00, wear sun protection, and seek shade during peak hours. Those visiting archaeological sites like Gortyna are advised to go early in the morning or late afternoon. Air-conditioned museums, caves such as Melidoni or Sfendoni, and shaded tavernas offer good midday refuges. Check local forecasts before planning day trips, as heat may intensify in inland and southern areas of the island.
