Back to newsA new survey by IELKA, the Greek retail and consumer research institute, finds that only one in two Greeks plans to take a vacation this year. Among those who do, the majority expect to travel for between four and seven days. Budget constraints and economic pressures are the likely drivers behind the reduced travel intent compared to previous years.
For tourists visiting Crete, this trend may translate into a quieter domestic travel season, meaning less competition for accommodation, restaurants, and popular sites typically crowded by Greek holidaymakers. Key destinations such as Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno may feel more relaxed than usual during peak months. Visitors should still book accommodation in advance, as international tourism to Crete remains strong and does not follow the same domestic slowdown reflected in this survey.
