Greece Cracks Down on Unsecured Cargo with €150 Fines

Thursday, 11 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greek traffic law includes a €150 fine for drivers who transport items in their vehicle in a way that compromises road safety. The Traffic Code specifies that loads must be properly secured and must not obstruct the driver's view, interfere with vehicle controls, or extend beyond the vehicle in a dangerous manner. Items left loose in the cabin, luggage protruding from an open boot, or cargo blocking rear visibility can all constitute violations. Traffic police can issue the fine on the spot. Tourists renting cars in Crete should take care when loading luggage, beach equipment, or purchases from local markets. Before setting off, ensure all items are secured in the boot or fastened with straps, nothing blocks mirrors or windows, and no load extends unsafely beyond the vehicle's bodywork.
