Back to newsCrete is accessible by both air and sea. The island has two international airports: Heraklion (HER), located in the north-central part of the island, and Chania (CHQ) in the northwest. Both handle direct flights from across Europe, with frequent connections especially during the summer season from April through October. Travelers coming from mainland Greece can also reach Crete by overnight ferry from Piraeus port in Athens, with services arriving at Heraklion or Chania. Ferry crossings take approximately 8 to 9 hours. Booking flights and ferries in advance is strongly recommended during peak summer months (July and August), when capacity fills quickly. Renting a car upon arrival is advisable, as public transport between towns and villages is limited.
