Toxic Fish With Human Teeth Endangers Greek Beachgoers

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A venomous fish species known for its distinctive human-like teeth has been spotted in Greek waters, raising awareness among beachgoers as the summer tourist season gets underway. The species in question is the silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), an invasive pufferfish that entered the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. It carries tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin with no known antidote, making it dangerous if handled or consumed. Authorities advise swimmers not to touch or pick up any unfamiliar fish encountered in the sea. Anglers who accidentally catch one should release it carefully without handling it directly. The fish is not considered a threat to swimmers in the water, but contact should be avoided. If you spot one on a beach or in a net, alert local authorities rather than attempting to handle it yourself.
