Island Overview
Crete is in a fully settled pattern on 7 June 2026. No precipitation is recorded at any monitored location, skies run from clear to mainly clear island-wide, and daytime highs reach 27.6 to 29.8°C. Overnight lows are mild everywhere, ranging from 17.3°C in Heraklion to 22.8°C in Makrigialos, with the south coast holding warmth well into the night. This is a straightforward summer day, with no significant weather to plan around.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast towns, Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Hersonissos, and Malia, top out between 27.6 and 29°C. Rethymno is the coolest point on the island today at 27.6°C, with the lightest winds at just over 10 km/h. Sea temperatures along the north run between 22.5 and 23.4°C. The south and east are marginally warmer: Makrigialos reaches 29.8°C with a minimum of 22.8°C, and Ierapetra holds above 22°C overnight. The south coast benefits from its sheltered aspect relative to the prevailing northerly flow, giving it a denser, more humid warmth that is especially noticeable after sunset.
The Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are dry and accessible. Temperatures at altitude will run 8 to 10 degrees below coastal readings, with good visibility and light winds. The Samaria Gorge is open and conditions are appropriate for the descent. Hikers should start early to avoid the sustained heat at the lower canyon in the early afternoon.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Winds are light across the whole island, peaking at 13.7 km/h in Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia. The sea is exceptionally flat: wave heights top out at 0.28 metres off Sitia and fall to just 0.08 metres off Rethymno. Sea surface temperatures range from 21.5°C at Ierapetra to 23.4°C at Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Malia. The UV index sits between 8.25 and 8.5 at all locations, placing the entire island in the very high category for several hours around midday.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent for swimming. The sea is flat, warm, and unobstructed from Chania to Sitia. Swimmers looking for the warmest water today should head to the north central coast around Heraklion, Hersonissos, or Malia, where the sea reaches 23.4°C. The south coast at Ierapetra is slightly cooler at 21.5°C, but the sheltered, near-waveless surface makes it equally comfortable.
Practical Tip for the Day
UV is at its most intense between 10:00 and 15:00. Apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation, reapply after each swim, and plan shade or indoor breaks during peak exposure hours. A hat and sunglasses are not optional today.
