Back to newsThe decommissioned vessel "Folegandros" has been sunk at Omvros Gialos beach in the Apokoronas area of the Chania regional unit, marking a major step forward for one of Crete's most ambitious alternative tourism projects. The deliberate sinking creates an artificial reef and forms the centerpiece of a new Underwater Diving Park in the region. The wreck will attract marine life over time, providing divers with an accessible and structured dive site in western Crete. Apokoronas is located roughly 30 kilometres east of Chania city, easily reachable by car. The diving park is expected to open new underwater tourism opportunities for both recreational and experienced divers visiting the island. Visitors interested in wreck diving or snorkeling in the area should follow announcements from local dive centers regarding access, depth details, and guided dive availability once the site formally opens.
