Back to newsWestern Europe is experiencing an intense heatwave caused by a weather pattern known as "Omega-type blocking," named for the Greek letter whose shape the high-pressure system forms in the atmosphere. This pattern traps hot air in place for extended periods, preventing cooler systems from moving in. The heatwave has been linked to more than 40 deaths in France alone. While the phenomenon is centered over Western Europe, elevated temperatures are also affecting the broader Mediterranean region, including Crete. Visitors to Crete should stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity between 12:00 and 17:00, wear sun protection, and seek air-conditioned spaces during peak heat hours. Check local forecasts daily, as conditions can shift quickly. Vulnerable travelers, including the elderly and young children, should take extra precautions.
