The village of Sfakia, in the Chania regional unit of western Crete, hosted a commemorative evening honoring Nikos Xylouris, the legendary Cretan lyra player and singer known as the "Archangel of Crete," marking 90 years since his birth. The event featured performances of his most beloved songs, celebrating a musician whose voice and lyrics became synonymous with Cretan identity and culture throughout the 20th century. Xylouris, born in Anogia in 1936, remains one of the most revered figures in Greek folk music. Visitors traveling through western Crete may encounter his music in local tavernas and cultural venues, as he continues to inspire musicians across the island. Sfakia itself is a scenic coastal area accessible via a winding mountain road from Chania, and is worth visiting for its traditional character and historical significance.
