Back to newsA debate is underway in Chania over a historic waterfront building known locally as "the Refrigerator" (Psygeio), a former cold storage facility near the old port. Former Chania mayor Tassos Vamvoukas has publicly called on the current municipality to take immediate action to reclaim the property, arguing it belongs to the city rather than private hotel interests. The dispute centers on public access and the future use of a prominent landmark in one of Crete's most visited areas. No changes to access or the surrounding waterfront are expected in the short term. Visitors to Chania's old port area can continue to enjoy the harbor, the Venetian lighthouse, and nearby restaurants and cafes without disruption while the ownership question is resolved through local government.
