Back to newsGreek authorities have arrested five people in Crete on charges of causing fires through negligence and violating fire prevention laws. The arrests were carried out by specialist arson investigation units (AKAEE) operating under the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes.
Fire risk in Crete is high during summer months, particularly from June through September when vegetation is dry and winds are strong. Greek law strictly prohibits lighting fires, barbecues, or burning agricultural waste in or near forested and rural areas during the fire danger season.
Tourists should be aware that even accidental fires can result in criminal charges and significant fines. Avoid discarding cigarettes outdoors, do not use open flames in natural areas, and check local fire danger levels before any outdoor activity. Emergency number for fires in Greece: 199.
