Heraklion Steps Up European Walkability Initiative

Wednesday, 1 July 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Heraklion Mayor Alexis Kalokaerinos participated in a working session of the STEP UP project, part of the INTERREG EUROPE 2021-2027 programme, which focuses on improving walkability in European cities. The initiative brings together municipalities across Europe to exchange best practices and develop policies that make urban areas more accessible and pleasant to navigate on foot. For visitors to Crete, this signals ongoing investment in pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in Heraklion. The city has been working to improve sidewalks, pedestrian zones, and street-level accessibility in its historic centre. Tourists exploring the old town, the harbour area, or walking to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum may benefit from these improvements over the coming years as the project advances. The INTERREG programme runs through 2027, meaning further urban upgrades are planned across the city's key visitor areas.
