Back to newsRethymno, a popular coastal city on Crete's northern shore, ranks 7th among all Greek municipalities for drowning incidents over the past five years, according to recent data. This places it among the highest-risk areas in Greece for water-related fatalities. Tourists planning beach visits in the Rethymno area should take precautions: swim only at beaches with lifeguard supervision, pay attention to flag warning systems (red flag means no swimming), avoid entering the sea after consuming alcohol, and never swim alone. The open sea conditions along this stretch of coast can be deceptive, with currents stronger than they appear from shore. Children should be supervised at all times near the water. Local authorities and beach operators are aware of the statistics, but visitor awareness remains the most effective preventive measure.
