A minor earthquake of magnitude 3.8 struck near Chania, in northwestern Crete, according to monitoring data from Volcano Discovery. Seismic activity of this scale is common in the eastern Mediterranean, which sits along active tectonic fault lines, and earthquakes below magnitude 4.0 are generally not felt strongly at the surface. No damage or injuries have been reported in connection with this event. Tourists currently in or traveling to the Chania region, including popular destinations such as the old town, Balos, and Elafonissi, should not be concerned. Accommodations and infrastructure in the area are built to local seismic standards. If you feel minor tremors during your stay, remain calm, move away from windows, and follow guidance from local authorities. Regular updates are available through the Geodynamic Institute of Athens.
