Record-breaking European heatwave claims lives, disrupts transport

Sunday, 28 June 2026/SourceCretan Magazine/1 min read
Europe is experiencing a severe heatwave with record-breaking temperatures causing significant disruption across the continent. In Germany, sections of highways have been closed and tram services suspended due to heat damage to infrastructure. Denmark and Czech Republic have also broken their own temperature records. The heatwave has been linked to hundreds of deaths across Europe. Visitors to Crete should be aware that similar extreme heat is affecting the region. Practical advice: avoid outdoor activities between 11am and 5pm, carry water at all times, wear sunscreen and a hat, and stay in air-conditioned spaces during peak hours. Check local transport updates before travelling, as heat can cause delays or service changes. Seek medical attention immediately if you or someone nearby shows signs of heatstroke, including confusion, rapid pulse, or loss of consciousness.
