Divers Remove 67 Toxic Invasive Pufferfish from Crete's Waters

Sunday, 5 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Divers recently removed 67 pufferfish (lagokéfalos) from the Gulf of Messara on Crete's southern coast, as part of ongoing efforts to control this invasive and highly toxic species in Greek waters. The silver-cheeked toadfish, which arrived in the Mediterranean from the Red Sea, is extremely dangerous to consume: its organs contain a potent toxin with no antidote. Local fishermen and diving teams periodically conduct these removal operations to protect both the marine ecosystem and public safety. Tourists should be aware that pufferfish are occasionally spotted along Cretan beaches and shallow coastal waters. Never handle or eat one if encountered. If you see a pufferfish for sale at a market or restaurant, do not purchase it, as selling it for consumption is illegal in Greece.
