Back to newsThe Samaria Gorge and Imbros Gorge in western Crete have been temporarily closed to visitors following a series of earthquakes recorded south of the island. The closures were announced as precautionary measures by OФΥΠΕΚΑ (the Greek Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization) and the Municipality of Sfakia to ensure visitor safety. Both gorges were evacuated and access has been suspended until further assessment of trail conditions can be completed. Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges and among Crete's most visited natural attractions, draws thousands of hikers each season. Imbros Gorge is a popular alternative route in the Sfakia region. Tourists with planned visits to either gorge should check official announcements before traveling, as reopening dates depend on safety inspections. Contact local tourism offices or OФΥΠΕΚΑ for updated access status.
