Crete holds particular significance in this issue, as it was the first region in Greece where the species was detected and where its population grew fastest. The lagocephalus is highly toxic if consumed and poses a serious food safety risk. Tourists visiting Crete should avoid purchasing or eating pufferfish from any source, as the fish can appear in local catches.
