Residents of Kokkino Chorio, a village in the Apokoronas region of western Crete, have taken legal action against the local municipality over persistent water supply problems. Twenty-eight villagers have filed injunctions against the Municipality of Apokoronas, citing months-long and recurring interruptions to their water access. The dispute reflects broader infrastructure challenges in rural parts of the island, where aging water networks can struggle to meet demand, particularly during the busy summer season. Tourists staying in the Apokoronas area, which includes popular destinations around Lake Kournas and the coastal villages between Chania and Rethymno, should be aware that some accommodation in inland villages may experience occasional water supply limitations. It is advisable to confirm water availability with your host or accommodation provider, especially if visiting between June and September when demand is highest.
