The government decided to give bidders additional time to prepare their proposals, a sign that competition for the contract is significant.
The concession would hand operation of these airports to a private company for a defined period, similar to the existing deal covering 14 Greek airports currently managed by Fraport. For travelers, a well-funded private operator typically means improved terminal facilities, better retail and dining options, and more efficient passenger services.
No immediate changes are expected to flight schedules or airport operations during the bidding process. Tourists visiting Crete through Heraklion or Chania airports this season should not anticipate any disruption.
