Back to newsPrincess Anne is making an official visit to Greece to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Crete, the fierce 1941 World War II battle in which Allied forces, including many Commonwealth troops, fought German paratroopers across the island. The battle is commemorated annually in late May, with ceremonies typically held in and around Chania, in western Crete, where much of the fighting took place. The Commonwealth War Cemetery at Souda Bay, near Chania, is the main site of remembrance and is open to the public year-round. Tourists visiting Crete this time of year may encounter increased official presence and some road closures around Chania during ceremony days. The Souda Bay cemetery and the nearby Battle of Crete Museum offer visitors a meaningful way to engage with this significant chapter of Cretan and European history.
