Saharan Dust Wave Forecast to Blanket Greece and Crete

Saturday, 9 May 2026/Google News/1
A new wave of Saharan dust is forecast to affect Greece, including Crete. The phenomenon occurs when strong southerly winds carry fine sand particles from the Sahara Desert northward across the Mediterranean. Certain regions will experience more intense conditions than others, with southern and eastern areas of Crete typically among the most affected. During these episodes, the sky takes on a hazy, orange-tinted appearance and air quality temporarily decreases. Tourists with respiratory conditions such as asthma should carry any necessary medication and consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity during peak dust hours. Keeping windows closed and rinsing exposed surfaces is also advisable. The event is natural and short-lived, usually clearing within one to two days as wind patterns shift.
