Seismic Activity Expected in Corinthian Gulf, Tourism Remains Safe

Friday, 24 April 2026/Google News/1
Greek seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos has stated he anticipates seismic activity in the Corinthian Gulf, a region in central Greece historically prone to earthquakes. While addressing concerns about Crete specifically, Papadopoulos provided an assessment of seismic risk on the island. Crete sits on one of the most active tectonic boundaries in Europe, and minor tremors are common and typically unfelt by visitors. Tourists do not need to take special precautions, as Greek buildings in tourist areas are constructed to strict earthquake-resistant standards. In the unlikely event of a stronger tremor, standard safety advice applies: move away from windows, stand in a doorframe or under a solid table, and follow instructions from local authorities. No disruption to travel or tourism infrastructure is currently expected.
