Back to newsGreece is accelerating construction on several major highway projects across the country, with completion targets set for mid-2027. In Crete, this includes ongoing work on the BOAK, the east-west highway connecting the island's main cities from Chania to Heraklion and beyond toward Lasithi. When completed, the BOAK will significantly reduce travel times between Crete's key destinations, making road trips across the island faster and safer for visitors. Currently, travelers should expect some construction delays along certain sections of the northern coastal route. Renting a car remains the best way to explore Crete, and while infrastructure improves, using GPS navigation is recommended as road conditions and signage can vary. The completed highway network will make popular sites in eastern Crete, including Elounda, Spinalonga, and the Lasithi Plateau, considerably more accessible from Heraklion airport.
