Crete has been awarded 154 Blue Flags for 2026, making it the top-ranked region in Greece for beach quality. The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized certification granted to beaches and marinas that meet strict standards for water cleanliness, environmental management, safety facilities, and visitor services. This means tourists can expect clean, well-maintained swimming areas with lifeguards, waste management, and regular water quality testing. The awarded beaches are spread across the island, covering popular stretches in Heraklion, Lasithi, Rethymno, and Chania. When choosing a beach, look for the Blue Flag flying at the entrance as a reliable indicator of safe, high-quality conditions. The certification applies throughout the 2026 summer season.
