Greece Launches Bounty Program for Invasive Toxic Pufferfish

Thursday, 25 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece has introduced a bounty program targeting the lagocephalos, a toxic invasive pufferfish species that has spread widely in Mediterranean waters. Fishermen will receive 5.33 euros per kilogram for catches of this fish, with Crete selected as the starting point for the initiative. The lagocephalos is extremely dangerous if consumed, as its flesh contains powerful toxins that can cause paralysis or death. The species has been disrupting local fishing activity and ecosystems for several years. Tourists should be aware that this fish may appear at markets or occasionally on restaurant menus under unfamiliar names. Do not eat lagocephalos under any circumstances. If you are unsure about a fish being served to you, ask your server to confirm the species before eating.
