Crete Resort Loses €43M as Opposition Demands Accountability

Monday, 8 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
The municipality of Hersonissos, one of Crete's busiest tourist resort areas on the north-central coast, is at the center of a political dispute over lost public funding. The leader of the main opposition, Giannis Segkos, has alleged that the current municipal administration failed to secure over 43 million euros in approved projects, resulting in at least two significant infrastructure works being removed from national and EU funding programs. Segkos is calling for accountability from local officials over the delistings. While the dispute is primarily political, the loss of these funds may delay infrastructure improvements in a municipality that hosts millions of visitors each summer, including the popular areas of Hersonissos town, Malia, and Stalida. No immediate disruption to tourism services is reported. Visitors to the area should expect normal operations throughout the 2026 season.
