Heraklion's Scenic Seafront Succumbs to Litter and Neglect

Saturday, 30 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Heraklion's seafront promenade is once again drawing attention for the wrong reasons. Recent photographs published locally show litter, abandoned furniture, and general neglect along sections of the city's coastal walkway. The waterfront runs along the northern edge of Heraklion, connecting the old Venetian harbour area to the city centre, and is a popular route for both locals and tourists arriving by ferry or exploring on foot. While the main harbour area and fortress remain well-maintained attractions, visitors walking along the broader promenade may encounter poorly kept stretches. The situation reflects ongoing concerns about municipal upkeep in the city. Tourists planning to walk the seafront are advised to stick to the section nearest the Venetian harbour and Koules Fortress, where conditions are consistently better. The issue has been reported before and local residents are calling for improved maintenance.
