Back to newsThe Forest Directorate of Chania has announced that anyone wishing to collect wild or cultivated aromatic and medicinal plants in the region must submit a formal request to the Service before July 10, 2026. This applies to both spontaneous and farmed herb varieties found in the Chania prefecture of western Crete. Tourists interested in foraging or gathering local herbs such as mountain tea, oregano, or thyme should be aware that collection without prior authorization is not permitted. If you plan to pick herbs during your visit, contact the Chania Forest Directorate in advance to obtain the necessary approval. Unauthorized collection of protected plants can result in fines under Greek environmental law.
