Phaistos Palace Gets €3.5M Restoration Under EU Program

The Minoan Palace of Phaistos, one of Crete's most significant archaeological sites, has received approval for a €3.5 million restoration and upgrade project funded under the regional "Crete 2021-2027" European Programme. Located on the Messara Plain in southern Crete near the village of Phaistos, the palace dates to around 2000 BC and ranks among the largest Minoan palatial complexes on the island, second only to Knossos. The project is expected to improve visitor infrastructure, site accessibility, and conservation of the ruins. During construction phases, some areas may have restricted access, so visitors are advised to check the site's current operating status before travelling. Phaistos is approximately 60 kilometres south of Heraklion and is accessible by car or organised tour. Admission is currently around 8 euros for adults.
