Read the story

The temple of Saint George of the Dorians in Heraklion was a relatively small three-nave church built in the second Byzantine period and ceded to the Armenians who had settled in the Castle of Heraklion at that time, possibly on the orders of Nicephorus Phocas who had liberated Crete in 961BC from the Arabs. The church is in the neighbourhood known as Agia Triada, named after the local chuch of Holy Trinity .

This neighbourhood was called the mikro tsarsaki ( small market ) in the Ottoman period. To this day, it functions as an Armenian church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist .

Inside there are Armenian tombs.
