Island Overview
June 3 delivers a clean, dry day across Crete from Chania in the west to Sitia in the far east. No rain is recorded at any station. Morning cloud is present in a few northern locations but does not interrupt the warmth. Temperatures reach a comfortable range, with highs between 25.9°C in Rethymno and 28.6°C in both Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Overnight lows have been mild across the board, from 16.6°C in Heraklion to 19.8°C in Rethymno, meaning the island held heat through the night.
North vs South
The north coast shows the most variety today. Heraklion and Rethymno carry some high cloud that keeps skies partly overcast, while Hersonissos and Malia are reporting mainly clear conditions. Chania stands apart with a fresh northwest wind reaching 26 km/h, the strongest reading on the island today. Beaches on the western north coast will feel noticeably breezy. The eastern corner, including Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Sitia, is the warmest and sunniest zone, with highs near 28 to 29°C under mainly clear skies. On the south coast, Ierapetra records a lower maximum of 24°C, a result of local airflow and greater exposure to the open Libyan Sea, though its overnight low of 19.7°C shows it stays warm into the evening.
The Mountains
No high-altitude station data is available today, but with lowland temperatures in the upper 20s, the summits of the White Mountains and Psiloritis will be considerably cooler. Anyone heading above 1,500 metres should carry a layer. Wind exposure at the ridge line can push the felt temperature well below what coastal readings suggest.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures sit between 21.8°C and 22.6°C along the coast, consistent and warming from last month. Wave heights are low across most of the shoreline, staying under 0.5 metres everywhere except Chania bay, where the local wind pushes swells to 0.9 metres. Wind speeds away from Chania range from 12 to 20 km/h, light enough to pose no difficulty for swimmers or small boats. UV is firmly in the high category island-wide, peaking at index 8.45 in Rethymno. Midday hours carry a genuine burn risk for unprotected skin.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good for swimming across all of Crete today. The calmest water is in the Gulf of Mirabello off Elounda and Agios Nikolaos, where wave heights stay below 0.3 metres. Chania bay is the choppiest option at 0.9 metres but remains within comfortable range for most adult swimmers. Sea temperatures at 22°C are warm enough for a sustained swim. Check the flag at your beach before entering, as local wind conditions can shift in the afternoon.
Practical Tip for the Day
With UV index values above 8 from mid-morning onward, apply factor 30 or higher sunscreen before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. Unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes between 11:00 and 16:00. A hat and sunglasses are not optional today, particularly if you are spending time on the water or at high altitude.
