A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck in the sea between Crete and the island of Kasos on May 24, 2026. The epicenter was located offshore, in the stretch of water separating eastern Crete from the small Dodecanese island of Kasos. Earthquakes of this size are common in the eastern Mediterranean and typically cause little to no structural damage. Tourists in Crete may have felt a brief tremor, particularly in the eastern parts of the island such as Sitia or Ierapetra. No damage or injuries have been reported. Visitors should be aware that Crete sits in a seismically active zone, and minor quakes occur regularly without posing significant risk. Current travel and tourism activities across the island are not affected. No action is required from visitors at this time.
