Sfakia honors Daskalogianlis, leader of 1770 Cretan uprising

On Sunday morning, the region of Sfakia in southwestern Crete held a ceremony honoring Ioannis Daskalogiannis and the rebels of his 1770 uprising against Ottoman rule. Daskalogiannis, a wealthy Sfakian merchant and sea captain, led one of the earliest organized revolts for Cretan independence, making him one of the island's most celebrated historical figures. Local authorities and community organizations gathered to mark the occasion with speeches and tributes. Sfakia, a rugged mountainous area on the southern coast of Crete, is accessible via a scenic mountain road from Chania (approximately 75 km). The region is known for its gorges, traditional villages, and deep-rooted resistance culture.
