Back to newsAuthorities retrieved 67 pufferfish (lagocephalus) from the Messara Gulf on the southern coast of Crete, with the largest specimen measuring 65 centimeters. Pufferfish are an invasive species in the Mediterranean and are extremely dangerous: their flesh and organs contain a potent toxin with no known antidote. Tourists should be aware that pufferfish may be present in local waters and should never be handled if encountered on beaches or while swimming. Most importantly, do not purchase or consume pufferfish under any circumstances, as it is illegal to sell them in Greece and eating them can be fatal. If you spot one, alert local authorities or fishermen rather than touching it.
