Crete has been placed on high fire risk alert (Level 3, "Yellow" alarm) for Friday, July 4, 2026, according to the Greek Fire Service. The island joins 28 regions across Greece flagged for elevated wildfire danger. Conditions such as strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation increase the likelihood of fires spreading rapidly. Tourists visiting Crete on Friday should take the following precautions: avoid lighting fires or barbecues in outdoor or forested areas, do not discard cigarettes from vehicles or in dry vegetation, and stay away from areas where smoke is visible. If you are hiking or visiting rural and mountainous areas, check local conditions before setting out and follow any instructions from authorities.
